Environmental System

Venturi Scrubber

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The dirty gas entering a scrubber is forced at high velocity through a venturi where it collides with scrubbing water. The tiny water droplets capture particles. Entrainment Separator-cyclonic separator or multi-stage entrainment separator effectively collects fine droplets from the gas stream while operating at low pressure drop, and discharged into a recycle tank. Some of the liquid is continuously purged to limit the solids concentration and allow recirculation back to the venturi section. Venturi scrubber can remove both small particle (PM2.5) and gaseous pollutants. The typical operating pressure drop is 200 to 2000 mm W.C. ,Which is influenced by aerodynamic size of the particle.

Standard system materials:

  • Fiberglass-reinforced plastic(FRP)
  • Fire-retardant fiberglass-reinforced plastic
  • HDPE, PP,PVC,CPVC
  • 304/316/316L/37L Stainless
  • Inconel, Hastelloy

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

A venturi scrubber consists of three sections: a converging section, a throat section, and a diverging section. The exhaust stream enters the converging section and, as the area decreases, gas velocity increases. Liquid is introduced either at the throat or at the entrance to the converging section. The exhaust gas, forced to move at extremely high velocities in the small throat section, shears the liquid from its walls, producing an enormous number of very tiny droplets. Particle and gas removal occur in the throat section as the exhaust stream mixes with the fog of tiny liquid droplets. The exhaust stream then exits through the diverging section, where it is forced to slow down. Venturis can be used to collect both particulate and gaseous pollutants, but they are more effective in removing particles than gaseous pollutants.

Liquid can be injected at the converging section or at the throat. The liquid coats the venturi throat making it very effective for handling hot(230℃), dry exhaust gas that contains dust. Otherwise, the dust would have a tendency to cake on or abrade a dry throat.
